Project and contract number
Name the project and the contract or PO number. On larger jobs, the customer’s accounts payable will match against it.

Billing period or milestone
Say which phase or period the invoice covers. Progress billing only works when each invoice is clearly one step.

Contract value and billed to date
Showing the contract total and the amount billed so far lets the customer see where the job stands.

Change orders on their own lines
Approved changes should be separate lines with their change-order numbers, never folded into the base work.

Retainage, if any
If the contract holds back retainage, show the amount withheld and when it is due.

Invoice each phase or period as its own document, name the phase, and show the contract value and the amount billed to date. Put change orders on separate lines. Larger commercial jobs may require an AIA-style pay application instead.
