Use Bokeping Skills with your AI assistant
Run ready-made AI playbooks for a first look at a company, a QuickBooks Online move, a month-end review, or 1099 readiness.
A Skill is a written playbook for your AI assistant. It tells the assistant what to ask you, what to check and in which order, what report to hand back, and what it must never do on your behalf. Skills turn a vague request such as “check my books” into the same careful review every time.
Skills come with your Bokeping connection. There is nothing extra to install unless you want a local copy. First connect your assistant.
The four Skills
Section titled “The four Skills”| Skill | Use it when | You get back | It never |
|---|---|---|---|
| Take the first look at a company | You are taking on a new company or client | A scope sheet: setup, how big the books are and how they arrived, bank, receivables, payables, migration and close status, missing items, and next steps | Judges the previous bookkeeper’s work, or posts, drafts, or suggests entries |
| Migrate from QuickBooks Online | You are moving a company’s books from QBO | Which QBO reports to export, the order to import them, checks before and after each file, and a migration report | Imports a file. You start each import on the import page |
| Review a period before closing the books | You want to close a month, quarter, or year | Every close blocker and warning explained, bank and receivable/payable checks, statement tie-outs, and a review report | Closes, locks, or reopens a period, or posts an entry |
| Check 1099 readiness for a filing year | You are preparing to issue 1099s | Contractors over the year’s threshold, who is missing a W-9, tax ID, or address, which payments count, and vendors that may be unflagged | Decides who is a contractor, files anything, or shows more than the last four digits of a tax ID |
Permissions each Skill uses
Section titled “Permissions each Skill uses”A Skill can only use the permissions your connection has. If one is missing, the assistant tells you which one and how to add it. See Add a permission later.
| Skill | Needs | Can also use |
|---|---|---|
| Take the first look at a company | View company setup, View financial reports | Chart of accounts, bank feeds, customers, vendors, journal entries, close readiness, imports, 1099 reporting, items, stock movements |
| Migrate from QuickBooks Online | View company setup, View imports and migration checks, View chart of accounts | Prepare imports, View financial reports |
| Review a period before closing the books | View close readiness, View company setup, View financial reports | Bank feeds, journal entries, stock movements, imports, Prepare journal entries |
| Check 1099 readiness for a filing year | View 1099 reporting, View company setup | Payments, expenses, vendors, bank feeds |
The two permissions in bold change your books, and both stop short of the books themselves:
- With Prepare imports, the migration Skill maps each uploaded file and runs its preview. You review it and start the import yourself.
- With Prepare journal entries, the close Skill prepares only an adjusting entry your accountant asks for, with the amounts they give. You open it, check it, and post it from the journal page.
Run a Skill
Section titled “Run a Skill”From your AI app’s prompt menu
Section titled “From your AI app’s prompt menu”Most AI apps list a connected service’s prompts in a menu, often behind a + or / button. Look for:
- Bokeping: Take the first look at a company
- Bokeping: Migrate from QuickBooks Online
- Bokeping: Review a period before closing the books
- Bokeping: Check 1099 readiness for a filing year
Each one asks for one optional detail. Fill it in if you already know it, or leave it blank and the assistant will ask:
| Skill | Optional detail |
|---|---|
| Take the first look at a company | Your goal, for example “close the year” or “clean up the books” |
| Migrate from QuickBooks Online | Cutover date, the last day whose transactions come from QBO |
| Review a period before closing the books | Closing date, the last day of the period |
| Check 1099 readiness for a filing year | The filing year |
In Claude Code
Section titled “In Claude Code”Type the Skill as a slash command:
/mcp__bokeping__bokeping_intake_diagnosis
/mcp__bokeping__bokeping_qbo_migration
/mcp__bokeping__bokeping_period_close_review
/mcp__bokeping__bokeping_1099_readiness
Just ask
Section titled “Just ask”If your app has no prompt menu, describe the job in plain words, for example “Can we close September?” or “Are we ready to issue 1099s for 2025?” The Bokeping MCP page shows a sample question for each Skill.
Install a Skill as a local copy (optional)
Section titled “Install a Skill as a local copy (optional)”Some AI apps can keep Skills as local files. This is useful if you want to read a Skill before using it, or share it with your team.
- Open the Bokeping MCP page and find the Skill under Ready-made playbooks for your AI.
- Choose Download SKILL.md.
- Put the file in a folder with the Skill’s name inside your app’s skills directory. For Claude Code, for example:
~/.claude/skills/bokeping-period-close-review/SKILL.md
| Skill | Folder name |
|---|---|
| Take the first look at a company | bokeping-intake-diagnosis |
| Migrate from QuickBooks Online | bokeping-qbo-migration |
| Review a period before closing the books | bokeping-period-close-review |
| Check 1099 readiness for a filing year | bokeping-1099-readiness |
A local copy still needs your Bokeping connection to read the books. Download it again from time to time; the version that comes with the connection is always the current one.
After a Skill finishes
Section titled “After a Skill finishes”Read the report before acting on it. Every decision stays with you: whether a period is ready to close, whether a vendor is a contractor, and whether an import or journal entry is right. Open the records and reports it mentions in Bokeping, confirm the figures, then complete the work there:
- Close a period: Close and reopen an accounting period.
- Issue 1099s: Review the 1099 Contractor Report.
- Finish an import: Prepare your records for import.
